From
the introduction:
Almost
everything taught about child-raising focuses on helping the parent
change the child's behavior. Approaches swing between passive
and aggressive, gentle and firm, but all eventually lead to many
difficulties. This book takes a very different approach; it focuses
on you, the parent.
How
do you help children do better in school? What should you do when
your child lies to you? How do you instill the right values in
your children? These are important questions for parents--but
our answer is always the same: We're only interested in helping
you learn from your conflicts, and so become a more loving parent.
As you become more loving, you'll find creative solutions to your
specific problems that will work best for you. We will not offer
solutions to various and specific problems, but offer instead
a lifelong approach to one problem: the lack of love and joy and
self-esteem and how to have more of the wonderful possibilities
that life has to offer. In the process, you'll also learn a new
meaning for the phrase "loving behavior."
This
book is for those parents who value individual freedom, creative
thinking the full expression of feelings, parents' involvement
with their children, and self-knowledge and self-esteem for both.
More than anything, this is for parents who love and respect their
children, have faith in their innate goodness, and respect for
their abilities. If your hope is to make things run smoothly while
spending a minimum of time involved with child raising, this book
isn't for you. If your goal is merely to find ways to get your
children to do that you want them to, this book isn't for you.,
But if you already have the faith, or are open to the possibility,
that learning about yourself and your children is the way for
both of you to get what you need, then read on.
